Ah, Salisbury steak—a comforting, hearty dish with tender beef patties smothered in rich gravy. Here’s a classic way to make it:


Salisbury Steak

Ingredients (serves 4):

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (½ for patties, ½ for gravy)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil (for frying)

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Steps:

  1. Make the Patties:
    • In a bowl, mix ground beef, ½ chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
    • Form into 4 oval-shaped patties.
  2. Cook the Patties:
    • Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
  3. Make the Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté the remaining chopped onion until soft.
    • Sprinkle in flour and cook 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
    • Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce until smooth.
    • Simmer until thickened, about 3–5 minutes. Season to taste.
  4. Combine & Simmer:
    • Return the patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer 5–10 minutes until fully cooked through.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles, smothered in gravy.
