Add sugar and garlic during the last few minutes.
2. Make the soup
Pour in the wine (if using) and cook 2–3 minutes.
Add beef broth, thyme, salt, and pepper.
Simmer 15–20 minutes.
3. Prepare the bread
Toast slices of French bread until crisp.
4. Assemble
Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls.
Place toasted bread on top and cover with shredded cheese.
5. Broil
Place bowls under the broiler 2–3 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
Tips
- The key to great French onion soup is slow caramelized onions—don’t rush them.
- Gruyère cheese gives the most authentic flavor, but Swiss or mozzarella works too.
- Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce for extra depth.
This soup pairs beautifully with salads, roasted meats, or crusty bread. 🧅🥖
