Buttermilk Biscuits and Sausage Gravy

Buttermilk Biscuits and Sausage Gravy is a classic comfort-food breakfast. Fluffy buttermilk biscuits are topped with creamy, peppery sausage gravy.


Ingredients

For the Buttermilk Biscuits

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons cold butter (cut into small pieces)
  • 1 cup cold buttermilk

For the Sausage Gravy

  • 1 lb breakfast sausage
  • 2–3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • ½ teaspoon salt (to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

How to Make Buttermilk Biscuits

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in cold butter using a fork or pastry cutter until crumbly.
  4. Add buttermilk and mix gently until a dough forms.
  5. Turn onto a floured surface and lightly knead a few times.
  6. Roll to about 1 inch thick and cut into biscuits.
  7. Place on a baking sheet and bake 12–15 minutes until golden.

How to Make Sausage Gravy

  1. Cook sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned.
  2. Sprinkle flour over the sausage and stir well.
  3. Cook 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  4. Slowly add milk while stirring constantly.
  5. Simmer until thick and creamy (about 5 minutes).
  6. Season with salt and plenty of black pepper.

Serve

Split warm biscuits in half and pour the sausage gravy generously over the top.
