🍽️ Smothered Hamburger Steak

🛒 Ingredients

For the patties:

  • 500 g ground beef
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 onion (sliced)
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper (to taste)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Make patties:
    • In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic, and spices.
    • Form into oval-shaped patties.
  2. Cook patties:
    • Heat a pan and cook patties until browned (about 4–5 minutes per side).
    • Remove and set aside.
  3. Make onion gravy:
    • In the same pan, melt butter.
    • Add sliced onions and cook until soft and caramelized.
  4. Thicken:
    • Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes.
  5. Add liquid:
    • Slowly add beef broth while stirring.
    • Add Worcestershire sauce and simmer until thickened.
  6. Smother:
    • Return patties to the pan.
    • Spoon gravy over them and simmer for 10–15 minutes.

🍽️ Serve With

  • Mashed potatoes 🥔
  • Rice
  • Buttered vegetables

💡 Tips

  • Add mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor 🍄
  • Don’t overmix the meat → keeps patties tender
  • Use a little soy sauce if you don’t have Worcestershire
