🌽 Skillet Cornbread – Crispy, Golden, Southern-Style

Skillet cornbread is a classic southern favorite. Cooking it in a cast-iron skillet gives it a crispy crust with a soft, tender inside. Perfect as a side for chili, BBQ, or fried chicken!


đź§ľ Ingredients (8 servings)

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ÂĽ cup sugar (optional, for slight sweetness)
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup milk or buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • ÂĽ cup melted butter or oil (plus extra for the skillet)

1. Preheat & prep skillet

  • Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F)
  • Place a 9-inch cast-iron skillet in the oven to heat, then add a little butter or oil

2. Mix dry ingredients

  • In a bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt

3. Mix wet ingredients

  • In another bowl, whisk milk, egg, and melted butter

4. Combine

  • Pour wet mixture into dry ingredients and stir until just combined (don’t overmix)

5. Bake

  • Pour batter into hot skillet
  • Bake 20–25 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean

6. Serve

  • Slice directly from the skillet
  • Optional: serve with butter, honey, or maple syrup

  • Preheating the skillet gives that crispy crust
  • For extra flavor, add corn kernels, jalapeños, or shredded cheddar
  • Don’t overmix the batter—cornbread is best slightly tender and crumbly
