Here’s a classic skillet cornbread recipe—crispy on the outside, soft and tender inside, perfect for pairing with chili, soup, or stew.


🌽 Skillet Cornbread

🛒 Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1–2 tbsp sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup melted butter (plus 1–2 tbsp for skillet)

  1. Preheat oven & skillet
    • Heat oven to 200°C (400°F)
    • Place a cast-iron skillet in the oven to warm
  2. Mix dry ingredients
    • In a bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt
  3. Add wet ingredients
    • Stir in milk, egg, and ¼ cup melted butter until just combined (don’t overmix)
  4. Prepare skillet
    • Carefully remove the hot skillet, add 1–2 tbsp butter, and coat the bottom
  5. Bake
    • Pour batter into hot skillet
    • Bake 20–25 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean
  6. Serve
    • Cut into wedges and serve warm with butter, honey, or jam
