🥩 Ingredients:

For the filling:

  • 500g ground lamb (traditional) or beef (often called cottage pie)
  • 1 small onion (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup broth (beef or chicken)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper
  • 1 tsp dried thyme (optional)

For the mashed topping:

  • 3–4 potatoes (peeled & chopped)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼–½ cup milk
  • Salt to taste

1. Make the mashed potatoes

  • Boil potatoes until soft
  • Mash with butter, milk, and salt until smooth
  • Set aside

2. Cook the filling

  • In a pan, cook onion and garlic until soft
  • Add ground meat and cook until browned
  • Stir in tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, and seasoning
  • Add vegetables and simmer for 5–10 minutes until slightly thickened

3. Assemble

  • Spread the meat mixture into a baking dish
  • Spoon mashed potatoes on top and spread evenly
  • Use a fork to create texture (helps browning)

4. Bake

  • Bake at 200°C (400°F) for 20–25 minutes
  • Broil for 2–3 minutes at the end for a golden top

  • Sprinkle cheese on top for extra richness 🧀
  • Use leftover mashed potatoes to save time
  • Let it rest 5–10 minutes before serving (it sets better)
