🥩 Poor Man’s Steak with Onion Gravy
A budget-friendly comfort dish made with seasoned ground beef patties and rich onion gravy—simple, filling, and very satisfying.
🧾 Ingredients
For the “steaks”:
- 500g–1kg ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder (optional)
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
For the onion gravy:
- 2 large onions, sliced
- 2 tbsp butter or oil
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef broth (or stock cube + water)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: a splash of soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce
🍳 Instructions
1. Make the patties
- Mix ground beef, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, and seasonings
- Shape into oval “steak” patties
- Lightly brown in a pan (don’t fully cook yet)
- Set aside
2. Cook the onions
- In the same pan, melt butter
- Cook sliced onions until soft and golden
3. Make the gravy
- Sprinkle flour over onions and stir (this makes a roux)
- Slowly add beef broth while stirring
- Let it thicken into a smooth gravy
- Season with salt, pepper, and optional sauces
4. Simmer the steaks
- Return patties to the pan
- Cover and simmer 15–20 minutes
- Spoon gravy over the top while cooking
