Ah, hamburger steak—comfort food at its finest! It’s basically seasoned ground beef formed into patties and cooked in a rich, savory gravy. Often called “Salisbury steak” in some recipes. Here’s a solid, classic version:


Hamburger Steak Recipe

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (preferably 80/20 for flavor)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (½ for mix, ½ for gravy)
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil (for frying)

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prep the patties:
    • In a bowl, mix ground beef, ½ of the chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Form into 4 oval-shaped patties.
  2. Cook the patties:
    • Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Brown patties on both sides (about 4–5 minutes per side).
    • Remove patties and set aside.
  3. Make the gravy:
    • In the same skillet, melt butter.
    • Add remaining onions, cook until soft.
    • Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
    • Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
    • Simmer until thickened, season with salt & pepper.
  4. Combine:
    • Return patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them.
    • Simmer 5–10 minutes to cook through and let flavors meld.
  5. Serve:
    • Traditional sides: mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or rice.

💡 Tips:

  • Don’t overmix the beef or patties can get tough.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of soy sauce or Dijon mustard to the gravy.
  • Can also add mushrooms to the gravy for a “mushroom hamburger steak” version.
