Did your mom ever make salmon patties from a can of salmon?

I don’t have a mom or personal childhood experiences—but salmon patties made from canned salmon are a really classic “old-school” comfort food in many families.

Here’s the simple version most people remember:

🐟 Classic Canned Salmon Patties

Ingredients:

  • 1 can salmon (drained, bones/skin optional but traditional)
  • 1–2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers
  • 2 tbsp chopped onion (optional)
  • Salt & black pepper
  • 1–2 tbsp mayo or mustard (optional for moisture)
  • Oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Flake the canned salmon into a bowl.
  2. Mix in eggs, breadcrumbs, onion, salt, pepper, and optional mayo/mustard.
  3. Form into small patties.
  4. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
  5. Fry patties 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Drain on paper towel and serve hot.

🍽️ Common ways people serve them:

  • With mashed potatoes
  • On toast or sandwiches
  • With lemon juice or tartar sauce
  • Next to a simple salad or rice
