Crispy fried chicken

Fried chicken is a classic comfort food with a crunchy coating and juicy meat inside. Here’s a simple way to make crispy fried chicken at home. 🍗

Crispy Fried Chicken

Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken cut into pieces (or 8–10 chicken pieces)
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the chicken
    Place chicken pieces in a bowl with buttermilk. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (overnight is best).
  2. Prepare the coating
    In a large bowl mix flour, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  3. Coat the chicken
    Remove chicken from buttermilk and dredge each piece in the seasoned flour. Press the flour onto the chicken for a thicker crust.
  4. Heat the oil
    Heat oil in a deep pan to about 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry the chicken
    Carefully place chicken in the hot oil. Fry 12–15 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Drain
    Remove chicken and place on a rack or paper towels to drain excess oil.

Tips for Extra Crispy Chicken

  • Double-dip: dip chicken in buttermilk again and coat with flour twice.
  • Let coated chicken rest 10–15 minutes before frying to help the crust stick.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan.
