Here’s a classic, creamy, and comforting creamed peas recipe—perfect as a side for meats, chicken, or even toast:


🌱 Creamed Peas

🛒 Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk (or cream for richer version)
  • Salt & black pepper (to taste)
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 small onion or shallot, finely chopped (optional)

  1. Cook the peas:
    • If using fresh peas, boil for 3–4 minutes until tender, then drain.
    • If frozen, thaw or cook according to package instructions.
  2. Make the cream sauce:
    • In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
    • Optional: sauté onion or shallot until soft.
    • Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
  3. Add milk:
    • Slowly whisk in milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
    • Cook until thickened (about 3–5 minutes).
  4. Combine peas and sauce:
    • Stir peas into the sauce.
    • Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
    • Cook 2–3 more minutes until heated through.
  5. Serve:
    • Hot as a side dish with roasted meats, chicken, or ham.

💡 Tips

  • For extra richness, use half-and-half or cream instead of milk.
  • Add a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese for a cheesy twist.
  • You can mash a few peas into the sauce for a thicker, smoother texture.
