Classic Stuffed Cabbage Rolls – Eat or Pass?

Eat. No question. Classic stuffed cabbage rolls are one of those old-school comfort dishes that are way better than they sound on paper.

They look simple, but when done right? Tender cabbage + savory meat + tangy tomato sauce = pure comfort food energy.


🥬 Classic Stuffed Cabbage Rolls (Golubki Style)

Ingredients:

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (or mix beef + rice filler style)
  • 1/2 cup cooked rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg (helps bind filling)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional)

Sauce:

  • 2 cups tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1–2 tbsp sugar (balances acidity)
  • 1 tsp vinegar or lemon juice
  • Salt & pepper to taste

🔥 Instructions:

  1. Soften the cabbage:
    Boil or steam the whole cabbage until leaves peel off easily.
  2. Make the filling:
    Mix ground beef, rice, onion, garlic, egg, and seasoning.
  3. Roll them up:
    Place filling in cabbage leaves, fold sides, and roll tightly.
  4. Layer in pot:
    Put rolls seam-side down in a deep pot or baking dish.
  5. Add sauce:
    Pour tomato sauce mixture over the top.
  6. Cook slow:
    Simmer covered on low heat for 1.5–2 hours (or bake at 350°F / 175°C).
