Here’s a classic Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy recipe that’s hearty, comforting, and perfect for a cozy meal:


Ingredients

For the Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the Steaks:
    • In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, finely chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
    • Shape into 4 oval patties.
  2. Cook the Patties:
    • Heat a skillet over medium heat with a little oil.
    • Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side, until browned but not fully cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  3. Make the Onion Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions. Sauté until soft and caramelized (about 8–10 minutes).
    • Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1–2 minutes.
    • Gradually add beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
    • Add Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Simmer the Steaks in Gravy:
    • Return patties to the skillet, spooning some gravy over them.
    • Simmer for 10–15 minutes until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is thickened.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, and pour extra gravy on top.

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of thyme or paprika to the gravy.
  • Browning the patties first adds depth of flavor to both the steaks and the gravy.
  • Leftovers keep well in the fridge and reheat nicely.
