Southern Fried Cabbage

Southern Fried Cabbage 🥬 is a simple, flavorful side dish popular in the southern United States. It’s usually sautéed with onions, garlic, and sometimes bacon for extra flavor.


Ingredients

  • 1 medium cabbage, chopped
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp butter (optional)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • ¼ tsp paprika (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the bacon
    • In a large skillet, cook chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy.
    • Remove bacon and keep the fat in the pan.
  2. Cook onion and garlic
    • Add sliced onion to the bacon fat and sauté for 2–3 minutes.
    • Add garlic and cook for about 30 seconds.
  3. Add cabbage
    • Add chopped cabbage and stir well.
    • Cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage softens.
  4. Season
    • Add salt, black pepper, paprika, and butter.
    • Stir in the cooked bacon.
  5. Serve
    • Cook for another 2–3 minutes and serve hot.

  • Add a splash of apple cider vinegar for a tangy flavor.
  • Some people add sliced smoked sausage to make it a full meal.
