Shepherd’s Pie 🥧🥔
A comforting baked dish made with minced meat, vegetables, and topped with creamy mashed potatoes.
Ingredients
For the meat filling
- 500 g ground lamb (traditional) or ground beef
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup carrots, diced
- 1 cup peas
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon thyme or rosemary
- Salt and black pepper to taste
For the mashed potato topping
- 3–4 potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 2 tablespoons butter
- ¼ cup milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
- ½ cup shredded cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Cook potatoes:
Boil potatoes in salted water for about 15 minutes until tender. Mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper. - Cook the filling:
Heat oil in a pan. Cook onion and garlic until soft. Add ground meat and cook until browned. - Add vegetables and sauce:
Stir in carrots, peas, tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer 10 minutes until slightly thick. - Assemble the pie:
Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish. Cover evenly with mashed potatoes. - Bake:
Bake at 200°C (400°F) for 20–25 minutes until the top is golden. - Rest and serve:
Let it sit for 5 minutes, then serve warm.
Tips
- For extra flavor, sprinkle cheddar cheese on top before baking.
- If using beef instead of lamb, the dish is technically called Cottage Pie.
