Shepherd’s pie

Here’s a classic Shepherd’s Pie 🥧🥔—a comforting dish with seasoned meat, vegetables, and creamy mashed potatoes on top.


Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

Meat Filling

  • 500 g ground lamb or beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, corn)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp flour (to thicken)

Mashed Potato Topping

  • 3–4 potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

1. Make the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until tender (about 15 minutes).
  2. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth.

2. Cook the Meat Filling

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Cook onion until soft, then add garlic.
  3. Add ground meat and cook until browned.
  4. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  5. Sprinkle flour and mix well.
  6. Add beef broth and simmer until slightly thick.
  7. Stir in mixed vegetables.

3. Assemble the Pie

  • Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish.
  • Spoon mashed potatoes on top and spread evenly.
  • Sprinkle cheese on top if using.

4. Bake

  • Bake at 190°C (375°F) for 20–25 minutes until the top is golden.

5. Serve

  • Let cool for 5–10 minutes before serving.

✅ Tips

  • For extra flavor, add garlic or cream to the mashed potatoes.
  • Use a fork to make lines on the potato topping so it browns nicely.
  • Traditionally lamb is used for Shepherd’s Pie, while beef makes Cottage Pie.
