🍽️ Salisbury steak with onion gravy
Salisbury steak is a hearty, comforting dish made of seasoned ground beef patties smothered in rich onion gravy—perfect for dinner with mashed potatoes or rice.
🛒 Ingredients (Serves 4)
For the steak:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt & pepper to taste
For the onion gravy:
- 1 tbsp butter or oil
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt & pepper to taste
👩🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Make the patties
- In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
- Form into 4 oval patties.
2️⃣ Cook the patties
- Heat a skillet with a little oil over medium heat
- Brown patties on both sides (they don’t need to cook through yet)
- Remove patties from the pan and set aside
3️⃣ Make the onion gravy
- In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions
- Sauté until golden and soft
- Sprinkle flour over onions, stir, and cook 1–2 minutes
- Slowly add beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps
- Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper
- Return patties to the gravy, cover, and simmer 15–20 minutes until cooked through
💡 Tips
- Use lean ground beef to avoid greasy gravy
- Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles
- Add mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor
If you want, I can also give you a slow cooker version so the patties become extra tender and the gravy super rich—basically “set it and forget it” comfort food.
Do you want me to do that?
