If you have these lines on your nails after 40, it is a clear sign that..

If you have vertical lines (ridges) on your nails after 40, it is usually a normal sign of aging — similar to wrinkles on the skin.

As we get older:

  • Nail growth slows down
  • The body produces less natural oils
  • Nails lose some smoothness and elasticity
  • Vertical ridges become more visible

This is called longitudinal ridging, and it’s very common after 40.

When It’s Usually Normal

✔️ The ridges run from cuticle to tip
✔️ They are shallow
✔️ No pain or color changes
✔️ All nails look similar

When It Might Signal Something Else

If ridges come with other changes, it could point to:

  • Deep grooves → Possible nutritional deficiencies (iron, B12)
  • Horizontal lines (Beau’s lines) → Illness, major stress, or infection
  • Color changes (yellow, dark, white spots) → Fungal infection or other health issues
  • Brittle nails + fatigue → Thyroid issues or anemia

How to Help Improve Nail Appearance

  • Stay hydrated
  • Ensure enough protein, iron, and biotin
  • Use cuticle oil regularly
  • Avoid harsh chemicals
  • Gently buff (don’t overdo it)

If you’re noticing sudden or dramatic nail changes, especially on just one nail, it’s a good idea to check with a healthcare professional.

If you’d like, tell me what the lines look like (vertical, horizontal, color, depth), and I can help narrow it down.
