Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

Here’s a classic Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy recipe—hearty, comforting, and perfect with mashed potatoes 🍽️🥩🧅


🥘 Ingredients (serves 4)

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • Salt & pepper to taste

🥄 Instructions

  1. Make the patties
    • In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
    • Shape into 4 equal-sized patties.
  2. Cook the patties
    • Heat a skillet over medium heat with a little oil or butter.
    • Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  3. Make the onion gravy
    • In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions. Sauté until soft and golden.
    • Sprinkle flour over the onions and cook 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly.
    • Gradually whisk in beef broth until smooth and simmer until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Combine & serve
    • Return patties to the skillet, spooning gravy over them to coat.
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables.

💡 Tips

  • For extra richness, add a splash of cream to the gravy.
  • Caramelize the onions slowly for a deeper flavor.
  • You can make the gravy ahead and just reheat with the patties.
