🌽 Fried Okra in Cornmeal
Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, this Southern classic is a perfect side or snack!
🧾 Ingredients (Serves 3–4)
- 1 lb fresh okra, sliced into ½-inch pieces
- 1 cup cornmeal
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder (optional)
- 1 egg
- ½ cup milk
- Oil for frying
👩🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Prep the okra
- Wash and slice okra into ½-inch pieces. Pat dry to reduce sliminess.
2️⃣ Make the coating
- In a bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- In another bowl, whisk together egg and milk.
3️⃣ Coat the okra
- Dip okra in the egg mixture, then dredge in the cornmeal mixture until fully coated.
4️⃣ Fry the okra
- Heat about 1 inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat.
- Fry okra in batches 3–5 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.
5️⃣ Drain and serve
- Remove fried okra with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels.
- Sprinkle with a little extra salt if desired.
