What do you call the end piece of bread?

Posted on March 24, 2026 by Admin

The end piece of bread is commonly called the heel of the loaf. 🍞

  • Heel: The first or last slice of a loaf, usually a little firmer or crustier than the middle slices.
  • Some people also call it the butt of the loaf in casual conversation, though “heel” is the standard term.

Fun fact: Many people save the heel for breadcrumbs, croutons, or toast because it’s a bit sturdier!

Do you want a few creative uses for bread heels?
