Shepherd’s pie

Shepherd’s Pie 🥧🍖
A classic comfort dish of savory meat and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes, baked until golden brown. (Traditionally, “shepherd’s pie” uses lamb; with beef, it’s sometimes called “cottage pie.”)


🧾 Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

For the filling:

  • 1 lb ground lamb or beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp thyme or rosemary
  • Salt & pepper
  • 1–2 tbsp olive oil

For the mashed potato topping:

  • 4–5 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • ¼–½ cup milk
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt & pepper

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Make the mashed potatoes

  • Boil potatoes in salted water until tender (about 15 minutes)
  • Drain, mash with butter and milk, season with salt and pepper
  • Set aside

2. Cook the filling

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat
  • Sauté onion, garlic, and carrots until soft
  • Add ground meat; cook until browned
  • Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme/rosemary, salt, and pepper
  • Add peas last and cook 1–2 minutes
  • Remove from heat

3. Assemble the pie

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C)
  • Spread meat and vegetable mixture evenly in a baking dish
  • Top with mashed potatoes, smoothing the surface
  • Optional: use a fork to create ridges for a golden crust

4. Bake

  • Bake 20–25 minutes, or until potatoes are lightly golden
  • Optional: broil 2–3 minutes for extra browning

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of beef or chicken broth to the meat mixture
  • Cheese on top? Sprinkle shredded cheddar over mashed potatoes before baking
  • Can be made ahead: assemble, refrigerate, and bake the next day
