🥧 Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherd’s Pie is a classic comfort dish made with a savory meat filling (traditionally lamb) topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden. It’s hearty, warm, and perfect for family dinners.


đź§ľ Ingredients

For the filling:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground lamb or beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • Salt & pepper to taste

For the topping:

  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (buttery and creamy)
  • Optional: 1 egg yolk for richer topping
  • Butter for dotting

🔥 Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: 200°C (400°F).
  2. Cook filling: In a skillet, brown the meat. Add onions, carrots, celery, and garlic; cook until softened. Stir in tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer 5–10 minutes until slightly thickened. Add peas at the end.
  3. Assemble: Spread meat mixture in a baking dish. Top evenly with mashed potatoes. Dot with butter.
  4. Bake: 20–25 minutes until the top is lightly golden. Optional: broil 2–3 minutes for extra browning.
  5. Serve: Hot, straight from the oven.

  • Use leftover mashed potatoes for a quick version
  • Swap lamb for beef if you prefer “Cottage Pie” (beef version)
  • Add shredded cheese on top for an extra indulgent twist
