Fried Okra in Cornmeal

🌽 Fried Okra in Cornmeal

Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, this Southern classic is a perfect side or snack!


🧾 Ingredients (Serves 3–4)

  • 1 lb fresh okra, sliced into ½-inch pieces
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • Oil for frying

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Prep the okra

  • Wash and slice okra into ½-inch pieces. Pat dry to reduce sliminess.

2️⃣ Make the coating

  • In a bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  • In another bowl, whisk together egg and milk.

3️⃣ Coat the okra

  • Dip okra in the egg mixture, then dredge in the cornmeal mixture until fully coated.

4️⃣ Fry the okra

  • Heat about 1 inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Fry okra in batches 3–5 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.

5️⃣ Drain and serve

  • Remove fried okra with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels.
  • Sprinkle with a little extra salt if desired.

🍽️ Serving Suggestions

  • With fried chicken
  • Over steamed rice
  • As a snack with dipping sauce

⭐ Tips:

  • For extra crispiness, let coated okra sit 5 minutes before frying.
  • Try adding cayenne pepper for a spicy kick.
