🌽🥬 Fried Okra in Cornmeal

A crispy Southern-style side dish made by coating fresh okra in seasoned cornmeal and frying until golden.


🧾 Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh okra
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • Oil for frying

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the okra

  • Wash the okra and slice it into ½-inch pieces.

2️⃣ Make the coating

  • In a bowl mix cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

3️⃣ Dip the okra

  • In another bowl whisk the egg with buttermilk.
  • Dip the sliced okra in the milk mixture, then coat well in the cornmeal mixture.

4️⃣ Fry the okra

  • Heat about 1 inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Fry the coated okra in batches for 3–5 minutes until crispy and golden.

5️⃣ Drain and serve

  • Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels.
  • Sprinkle with a little extra salt if desired.
