Salisbury steak

Here’s a classic Salisbury Steak recipe — juicy beef patties served in rich onion gravy.


🥩 Salisbury Steak

🧾 Ingredients (4 servings)

For the patties

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ½ small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

For the gravy

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp flour or cornstarch (for thickening)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

🍳 Instructions

  1. Make the patties
    • In a bowl mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Shape into 4 oval patties.
  2. Brown the patties
    • Heat a skillet over medium heat.
    • Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
    • Remove and set aside.
  3. Cook the onions
    • In the same pan melt butter and cook sliced onions until soft.
  4. Make the gravy
    • Stir in flour and cook 1 minute.
    • Slowly add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce while stirring.
    • Simmer until the gravy thickens.
  5. Finish cooking
    • Return the patties to the skillet.
    • Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes until cooked through.
  6. Serve
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or bread and spoon the onion gravy on top.

💡 Tips

  • Add mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor.
  • For extra tenderness, mix a little grated onion into the patties.
  • Salisbury steak tastes even better the next day because the flavors deepen.
