Shepherd’s pie
Shepherd’s pie is a classic comfort dish from the United Kingdom made with seasoned ground meat and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes, then baked until golden.
Ingredients
Meat Filling
- 1 lb ground lamb (traditional) or ground beef
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and black pepper
Mashed Potato Topping
- 2–3 cups mashed potatoes
- 2 tbsp butter
- ¼ cup milk
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Cook the meat
In a skillet, cook ground lamb or beef with chopped onion and garlic until browned. - Add flavor
Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, vegetables, and beef broth.
Simmer for 5–7 minutes until slightly thick. - Assemble
Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish.
Top with mashed potatoes and spread evenly. - Bake
Bake for 20–25 minutes until the top is lightly golden. - Serve
Let it cool for 5 minutes before serving.
Tip
If you use ground beef, the dish is technically called **Cottage pie instead of Shepherd’s pie.
