Shepherd’s pie

Shepherd’s pie is a classic comfort dish from the United Kingdom made with seasoned ground meat and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes, then baked until golden.

Ingredients

Meat Filling

  • 1 lb ground lamb (traditional) or ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper

Mashed Potato Topping

  • 2–3 cups mashed potatoes
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Cook the meat
In a skillet, cook ground lamb or beef with chopped onion and garlic until browned.
  3. Add flavor
Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, vegetables, and beef broth.
Simmer for 5–7 minutes until slightly thick.
  4. Assemble
Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish.
Top with mashed potatoes and spread evenly.
  5. Bake
Bake for 20–25 minutes until the top is lightly golden.
  6. Serve
Let it cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Tip

If you use ground beef, the dish is technically called **Cottage pie instead of Shepherd’s pie.
