Ingredients (serves 4)

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil for frying

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare Hamburger Steaks:
    • In a bowl, combine ground beef, finely chopped onion, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
    • Mix gently until just combined. Form into 4 equal patties.
  2. Cook Steaks:
    • Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Brown the patties on both sides (about 3–4 minutes per side). Remove and set aside.
  3. Make Onion Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, add butter. Sauté sliced onions until soft and golden brown (about 5–7 minutes).
    • Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to make a roux.
    • Gradually whisk in beef broth until smooth. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
    • Simmer until the gravy thickens (about 5 minutes).
  4. Combine & Serve:
    • Return hamburger steaks to the gravy. Simmer for 5–10 minutes to heat through and absorb flavors.
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
