Salisbury steak is a ground beef dish shaped like a steak, usually served with a rich onion and mushroom gravy. Despite the name, it’s more like a hearty meatloaf patty than an actual steak.


Ingredients (for 4 servings):

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Make the patties:
    • In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, finely chopped onion, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
    • Shape into 4 oval patties.
  2. Cook the patties:
    • Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  3. Make the gravy:
    • In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced mushrooms and onion until soft.
    • Sprinkle flour and cook 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
    • Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Combine & serve:
    • Return patties to the gravy and simmer 5 minutes.
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.
