Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil (for frying)

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the Hamburger Steaks:
    • In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
    • Mix gently until just combined (don’t overmix).
    • Shape into 4-6 oval patties.
  2. Cook the Steaks:
    • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
    • Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Prepare the Onion Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions. Cook until soft and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Sprinkle flour over onions and stir to form a roux. Cook 1-2 minutes.
    • Gradually add beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps.
    • Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 3-5 minutes until thickened.
  4. Combine & Serve:
    • Return hamburger steaks to the skillet with the gravy. Spoon gravy over the steaks and simmer for 2-3 minutes to heat through.
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables.
