Shepherd’s Pie 🥧🥔

A comforting baked dish made with minced meat, vegetables, and topped with creamy mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

For the meat filling

  • 500 g ground lamb (traditional) or ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup carrots, diced
  • 1 cup peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon thyme or rosemary
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For the mashed potato topping

  • 3–4 potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ cup shredded cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook potatoes:
Boil potatoes in salted water for about 15 minutes until tender. Mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper.
  2. Cook the filling:
Heat oil in a pan. Cook onion and garlic until soft. Add ground meat and cook until browned.
  3. Add vegetables and sauce:
Stir in carrots, peas, tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer 10 minutes until slightly thick.
  4. Assemble the pie:
Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish. Cover evenly with mashed potatoes.
  5. Bake:
Bake at 200°C (400°F) for 20–25 minutes until the top is golden.
  6. Rest and serve:
Let it sit for 5 minutes, then serve warm.

Tips

  • For extra flavor, sprinkle cheddar cheese on top before baking.
  • If using beef instead of lamb, the dish is technically called Cottage Pie.

Serving Ideas
