Amish Poor Man’s Steak

Posted on March 8, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a simple and hearty Amish Poor Man’s Steak 🥩 recipe—a comforting, pan-fried beef dish served with a rich onion and gravy sauce:

Ingredients

  • 500 g beef round steak or cube steak (thinly sliced)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional)
  • 2–3 tbsp vegetable oil or butter
  • 1 large onion (sliced)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch or flour (for gravy)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef
    • Mix flour, salt, pepper, and paprika on a plate.
    • Dredge the beef slices in the flour mixture, shaking off excess.
  2. Brown the Beef
    • Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Fry beef slices for 2–3 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. Cook the Onions
    • In the same skillet, sauté sliced onions until soft and caramelized.
  4. Make the Gravy
    • Add beef broth to the skillet with onions.
    • Mix cornstarch or flour with a little water to make a slurry and stir into the skillet.
    • Bring to a simmer, stirring until thickened.
  5. Combine Beef and Gravy
    • Return beef to the skillet and cook for another 5–10 minutes until heated through and tender.
  6. Serve
    • Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.

✅ Tips:

  • Pound the steak lightly if needed to make it more tender.
  • Use leftover round steak if you want a truly budget-friendly version.
  • For richer flavor, add a splash of soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce to the gravy.

I can also give a slow-cooker version that makes the beef super tender and flavorful if you want. Do you want me to share that?
