My husband has these lines of red bumps all over his side. They itch like crazy and look inflamed. We are scared it’s an infection. What is this?

I can’t diagnose from a description, but I can help you narrow down the most common possibilities based on what you’re seeing.

“Lines of red, very itchy bumps on one side of the body” most often points to a few things:

1. Contact irritation (very common)

This can happen if his skin touched something irritating—like a plant, detergent, belt, backpack strap, or new clothing fabric.

  • Often appears in streaks or lines
  • Very itchy, red, and inflamed
  • Can look like a “brush burn” pattern

This is one of the most likely causes if it’s purely itchy.

2. Insect bites (bedbugs or similar)

Some insect bites appear in lines or clusters.

  • Extremely itchy
  • Often grouped in a “line” pattern
  • May show up after sleeping somewhere new or using shared bedding

3. Shingles (needs attention)

A condition called Herpes Zoster usually causes a stripe on one side of the body, but it typically:

  • Starts with burning, tingling, or pain (itching can happen too)
  • Develops into red bumps or fluid-filled blisters
  • Follows a single “band” along the ribs or side

This is important because it needs medical treatment early.

4. Allergic skin reaction

Sometimes the immune system reacts strongly to something harmless (soap, food, medication, etc.).

  • Can look patchy or linear
  • Very itchy and inflamed
  • May spread if exposure continues

When to get checked quickly

It’s best to see a doctor soon if:

  • The rash is only on one side in a stripe
  • It becomes painful or blistery
  • He has fever or feels unwell
  • It’s spreading quickly

What you can do now

  • Don’t scratch (can worsen irritation or infection)
  • Use a cool compress for itching
  • Avoid new soaps, lotions, or detergents for now

If you want, tell me:

  • Is it painful or only itchy?
  • Are there blisters or just bumps?
  • Did it start suddenly or spread over days?

That can help narrow it down further.

He just sat cross-legged beside her grave, his head bowed. When I first saw him, I thought maybe he’d gone to the wro… See more
