Hip pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis—so it can mean a lot of different things depending on where it hurts and how it feels.
Common causes of hip pain
1. Muscle or overuse strain
- After sports, running, heavy walking, or awkward movement
- Feels sore or stiff, often improves with rest
2. Joint wear (arthritis)
- Especially Osteoarthritis
- Causes deep aching pain, stiffness (often worse in the morning or after sitting)
3. Bursitis (inflamed cushioning sacs)
- Hip Bursitis
- Pain on the outside of the hip, worse when lying on that side
4. Nerve-related pain
- Often linked to Sciatica
- Sharp, shooting pain that may travel from lower back down the leg
5. Injury
- Falls, sports injuries, or fractures (more serious, especially if you can’t walk properly)
6. Other causes
- Tendon irritation, lower back problems, or posture issues can also “feel like hip pain”
When it’s more concerning
You should get checked if you have:
- severe pain or can’t walk
- pain after a fall or injury
- swelling, redness, or fever
- pain lasting more than 1–2 weeks
If you want, tell me:
- where exactly it hurts (front, side, or deep inside)
- your age/activity level
- what makes it worse
…and I can help narrow down what it most likely is.
